Spotlight on Catherine, Your Death Project Manager

We all know there are many aspects of doula work, but one of the most important things you can do—possibly the foundation of being an end of life doula—is helping your clients prepare their advance care plans. No matter how young or healthy a person may be today, we all know that tomorrow is never a guarantee.

But like so many important tasks in life, putting an advance care plan together is easier said than done. There are so many details to consider! And some of them are pretty personal! If you hire somebody to help you, will you have to tell them your secrets? If you don’t want to tell them your secrets, will you really be prepared? Secrets aside, how are you even going to be sure you haven’t forgotten anything really important?

Even for doulas, advance care plans aren’t everyone’s strong suit. But this stuff is too important not to know! Fortunately IDLM has regular advance care planning classes taught by the fabulous Miss Pam Carter, and on top of that we are proud to be partnered with the Death Project Manager, an expert in helping you get organized in preparation for end of life.

From the Death Project Manager website:

Hi, I’m Catherine, and I’ll be your Death Project Manager.

Finding clarity in confusing times is what I do.

My combination of project management skills, curiosity, follow-through, and death positivity mean that I am patient but firm in discussing not just the logistics of mortality, but also in exploring what death means for each of us individually – and work to implement those lessons into your daily life.

Let’s work together to ensure you can rest in peace.

Catherine is a great planner but she also knows how to be the life of the party, which she proved by hosting the Silent Book Club of Death in Los Angeles for several years. She also joined us back in August for a fabulous IDLM CE Night (if you missed it but you are a part of the Movement, you can check out the recording on our Past Events page). Best of all, Catherine is the first official guest we are announcing for our upcoming Birthday Bash in January!

Putting an advance care plan together can be a big task, but you don’t have to be intimidated. We have trained professionals available to guide you through every step of the way. So come on over to the Movement to say hi and trade useful tips, and make sure to clear your calendar for the January Birthday Bash!

Time and Energy

Every aspect of life that requires you to show up is going to demand two major resources: time and energy. Whether the challenge is raising a family, maintaining a career, going back to school to gain new skills, or just indulging in a hobby that enriches your spirit—if you don’t put your energy into it, you won’t get good results. And if you don’t put any time in, well, it might not happen at all.

A Foundation for the Future

What distinguishes IDLM from many other programs is its integrative and forward-thinking approach. IDLM prepares doulas to work with hospice systems, not outside of them. The curriculum includes education on early hospice enrollment advocacy, regulatory awareness, ethical boundaries, and professional communication within healthcare environments.

Moving Through Transition

When a death doula becomes involved in the transition process, their job is to step back and look at the whole picture. The medical workers will do their work and the funeral workers will do theirs—the doula’s job is to see what isn’t being handled, and to figure out the best way to fill in the gaps.
