Last Call for Summer Summit!

Over the past few weeks, we have posted several blog entries spotlighting some of the guests who will be speaking to us at our upcoming Summer Summit celebration. Well this is going to be our last chance to do that because Summer Summit starts next week!

Summer Summit is great opportunity for us to hear from guest experts like Cynthia Pan and Emma Acker, and it also gives us a chance to hear about projects being done by members of the IDLM community outside the IDLM sphere, like all the fascinating work Robin Silver is doing with Your Morbid Friends, and the doulas partnering with filmmakers to create the documentary Through the Eyes of a Death Doula.

In addition to all of these enlightening presentations, this year’s Summer Summit will conclude with a round-table discussion in which doulas with years of experience with be able to share their knowledge in a setting a bit less formal than a class, to share some of their wisdom with those of us who are still just beginning to find our way.

On the final night of Summer Summit (Friday, August 1), IDLM will be hosting a round table discussion with our own Anna Adams and Pam Carter, as well as death doula Gabby Jimenez, Linda McDowell, RN, and Cassandra Biron, LCSW. These ladies have decades of death care experience between them, as well as being excellent and compassionate teachers. This is your chance to hear from them about anything and everything you’ve been wondering about being a death doula but were afraid to ask, so bring those questions! The discussion will be moderated by Robin Silver and no topic will be out of bounds.

Aside from a whole week’s worth of fabulous presentations, Summer Summit is a great chance to check in with your fellow IDLM students, graduates, and instructors. Whether you are a brand new student (or maybe just thinking about becoming one), or whether you’ve been busy with other things and haven’t bee around for a while, Summer Summit is the perfect chance to dive into IDLM for a quick visit—connect with friendly faces, learn a thing or two, and hopefully gain some inspiration to motivate you on your own journey.

If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s absolutely free here. We look forward to seeing you!

Time and Energy

Every aspect of life that requires you to show up is going to demand two major resources: time and energy. Whether the challenge is raising a family, maintaining a career, going back to school to gain new skills, or just indulging in a hobby that enriches your spirit—if you don’t put your energy into it, you won’t get good results. And if you don’t put any time in, well, it might not happen at all.

A Foundation for the Future

What distinguishes IDLM from many other programs is its integrative and forward-thinking approach. IDLM prepares doulas to work with hospice systems, not outside of them. The curriculum includes education on early hospice enrollment advocacy, regulatory awareness, ethical boundaries, and professional communication within healthcare environments.

Moving Through Transition

When a death doula becomes involved in the transition process, their job is to step back and look at the whole picture. The medical workers will do their work and the funeral workers will do theirs—the doula’s job is to see what isn’t being handled, and to figure out the best way to fill in the gaps.
