The beginning of a new year is always a great time for personal assessment. Even though we know it’s possible to evaluate, plan, and make changes in our lives at any time, there’s just something about that new number on the calendar that makes New Year’s feel like the right time to quit that bad habit we’ve been worrying about or to start that big project we’ve been meaning to get to for a while.

At IDLM it feels especially logical to begin the New Year with new energy, because the beginning of January is when we celebrate our annual Birthday Bash. Right at the beginning of the year, we gather virtually every evening for a week to hear from some of our favorite experts and professionals in the death care industry. It’s a great time for IDLM students to meet other members of the community they may not know yet, for graduates to reconnect with the community, and for the doula-curious to get a better idea of what we’re all about and to consider whether it might finally be time to take that next step and get into some training.

The IDLM Birthday Bash is a great way to get into the right mindset for how to move forward as an end of life professional in 2025. We will be hearing from favorites like Barbara Karnes and Brenda and Nancy from Odonata Care as well as David Copeland, the founder of Live Without Regrets doula services, who as a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community focuses on the specific needs that members of this community face during end of life. We will also be adding more speakers in the coming days, so make sure to keep your eyes on the Events page in the Movement to learn more!

Our Birthday Bash will be an online event running each evening from January 6 to January 10, 2025, and it is absolutely free to sign up. It’s a fantastic time to check in, get new info, see new faces and connect with old friends as we all start gearing up for the new year ahead. Come with questions if you have them, or just bring yourself. We can’t wait to see you!

A Foundation for the Future

What distinguishes IDLM from many other programs is its integrative and forward-thinking approach. IDLM prepares doulas to work with hospice systems, not outside of them. The curriculum includes education on early hospice enrollment advocacy, regulatory awareness, ethical boundaries, and professional communication within healthcare environments.

Moving Through Transition

When a death doula becomes involved in the transition process, their job is to step back and look at the whole picture. The medical workers will do their work and the funeral workers will do theirs—the doula’s job is to see what isn’t being handled, and to figure out the best way to fill in the gaps.

Bringing Yourself to the Work

It may seem at first that doula work is completely unrelated to whatever you were doing before, and that you’re starting again from scratch with no idea what you’re supposed to do. But the truth is, whatever you are bringing forward with you is something that you will be able to use as a doula.
