Welcome to the IDLM Family!!

New classes are beginning at IDLM and as always we are all so excited to welcome new members to the IDLM family. Whether our incoming students are totally new to the idea of end of life care, formalizing knowledge they have already gained through life experience, or just brushing up on expertise they already carry, we are thrilled to incorporate a new cohort into our ranks.

For a lot of new aspiring doulas, taking classes at IDLM represents the beginning of a new chapter. Depending on your background, a lot of what you learn here may be completely new to you, or it may validate things you have had the opportunity to learn that most other people don’t know anything about. It won’t take long for you to realize that the initial End of Life doula class will give you a fabulous, solid foundation for everything you need to know to do this work… and that once you finish the class, you will still have a lot to learn!

Most people who begin this training have no idea where this path will eventually lead them, or how long it will take them to get there. Before you know it, your perspective will change from “How will I ever learn all this?” to “I’m ready for some clients… but where are they!?”

They might turn out to be right in front of you, or it might take a while for you to make the connections you need in your community. Maybe doula work is something you will end up doing on the side, or only occasionally, depending on what else might need your time and attention in your life.

Whatever may lie in store for you, we want you to know that first and foremost, we are so glad you’re here. We can’t wait to support you as you learn and grow, through your formal IDLM classes and beyond. Just by being here, you are adding something special and unique to the IDLM community, and we hope you won’t be shy about sharing your particular knowledge and skills with us, and give us a chance to get to know you on the Movement.

Thank you so much for being here, and welcome.

A Foundation for the Future

What distinguishes IDLM from many other programs is its integrative and forward-thinking approach. IDLM prepares doulas to work with hospice systems, not outside of them. The curriculum includes education on early hospice enrollment advocacy, regulatory awareness, ethical boundaries, and professional communication within healthcare environments.

Moving Through Transition

When a death doula becomes involved in the transition process, their job is to step back and look at the whole picture. The medical workers will do their work and the funeral workers will do theirs—the doula’s job is to see what isn’t being handled, and to figure out the best way to fill in the gaps.

Bringing Yourself to the Work

It may seem at first that doula work is completely unrelated to whatever you were doing before, and that you’re starting again from scratch with no idea what you’re supposed to do. But the truth is, whatever you are bringing forward with you is something that you will be able to use as a doula.
