Overview

Advance care planning is like an insurance policy, providing peace of mind to ourselves and our loved ones, knowing that our affairs are organized and our desires are understood.

Having sympathy and understanding helps our loved ones to avoid guessing our reactions during difficult times. It brings peace of mind knowing that we have already communicated our wishes and values before being asked to make important decisions.

Taught by IDLM’s Pam Carter, we will discuss advanced care planning on an in-depth level – covering everything from making sure a client’s important usernames and passwords are available to their advocate for emergency access to discussing how client’s might wish their legacy to be remembered after they’re gone.

Advance Care Planning is not simply one document; it’s a series of things that complete a well-planned care outline. The discussion will cover the importance of having these completed in advance, as well as in-depth concept education so doulas understand and can explain each document clearly, so clients can make informed decisions.

We partnered with Thanacare, a patient-focused platform for end-of-life care and advance care planning, as part of our program. Our students and graduates will receive access to the Thanacare program, benefiting doulas who assist clients with Advance Care Planning (ACP). Our Life Planning Doula Specialist Program now includes training on how to properly use planning documents with Thanacare. Additionally, our team is going the extra mile by adding essential documents that are valuable for our IDLM Life Planning Doula Specialist program students.

This course is 17 Modules / Over 43 Hours of ACP presentations and discussions.  Complete support documentation and reference materials in your Student Dashboard. Guidance on both establishing the use of Thanacare as well as hard copy documentation to ensure your families have what they need when they need it without frustration and chaos.

Pam Carter

Over the last 40 years, Pam has worked with countless individuals as they prepared for their good death, supported loved ones as they made their final good-byes and guided people through the process of settling the estates of those who had passed on.

Pam views her work as an end-of-life doula and educator to be a sacred calling. Before this work was the focus of her career, she found herself being the “go-to” person in her community for providing education, advice and support to those preparing to die and their loved ones who are navigating the process of settling an estate while processing their own grief.

After working with so many different individuals and families across the economic spectrum, Pam realized that end-of-life education, planning and values-based care is sorely lacking for the majority. Today, she focuses her work on helping people prepare for their final adventure – a good death – through advanced planning education and active work “in the field” as a medical advocate and an end-of-life doula.
